A passenger ferry carrying hundreds of individuals caught fire off the coast of North Sulawesi, Indonesia, on July 20, 2025.
The KM Barcelona 5 was en route from Melonguane port in the Talaud Islands district to Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi province in Indonesia, when flames broke out.
The fire, which ignited mid-journey, impacted numerous individuals.
Over 575 passengers were rescued, including a two-month-old infant, while three individuals aboard the vessel lost their lives and two others remain unaccounted for.
Dramatic footage depicted frightened passengers leaping into the sea as thick smoke enveloped the ship.
Local fishermen and rescue teams collaborated to retrieve survivors from the water. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, according to reports.
This incident marks the third significant ferry disaster in Indonesia this month, prompting urgent concerns regarding maritime safety throughout the Indonesian transport network, particularly with aging fleets.
The fire incident raises further dialogue about the ongoing risks faced by travelers who depend on inter-island ferry services.
