The news as it trends

The Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Benjamin Hundeyin has responded to a viral video of police misconduct in Nigeria, recorded yesterday.

The footage allegedly shows officers assaulting citizens — including a lawyer who was slammed to the floor — and others who were reportedly roughed up for filming the encounter.

According to reports, the citizens began recording when the approach from the police officers — both in uniform and plainclothes — became confrontational.

The officers were allegedly caught on video attempting to seize the phones to prevent further recording, which escalated the situation.

In his statement, CSP Hundeyin emphasized the importance of balancing citizens’ rights with respectful conduct. He said:

“Inasmuch as you want to exercise your right to be able to do video recordings of police officers you have encounters with, please endeavour not to be intrusive, not to harass or assault the officers with your recording, not to obstruct the officers in the discharge of their duties and also importantly, to respect the privacy of other people (as can be seen in this part of the video left out by the poster).”

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police for Lagos State, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered a formal investigation.

Authorities say further updates will be provided as the inquiry progresses.
