The news as it trends
Kokichi Akuzawa, a 102-year-old Japanese man, has set a Guinness World Record as the oldest person to climb Mount Fuji.
Despite battling heart failure and shingles earlier in the year, Akuzawa trained rigorously, hiking weekly and walking daily, to prepare for the ascent.
He stretched the climb over three days, spending two nights in mountain huts, and reached the summit with help from his travel companions, including his nurse granddaughter.
Remarkably, he had climbed Fuji before at age 96, but this time, his achievement was officially recognized.
A retired livestock farmer and active volunteer, Akuzawa downplayed the feat, saying the view wasn’t anything special.
When asked if he’d do it again, he replied with a firm “no.”
