The news as it trends.
Hollywood writer and actress darling Issa Rae is under legal fire, as three Los Angeles screenwriters allege her 2025 film One of Them Days unlawfully copied their original screenplay One of Those Days.
Filed on July 30, the lawsuit accuses Rae’s ColorCreative company, Sony Pictures, and screenwriter Syreeta Singleton of copyright infringement.
The plaintiffs point to notable similarities in plot and character development, claiming their script was shared with industry producers months before Rae’s project was announced.
A key connection cited is a producer—previously involved with Rae’s HBO series Insecure—who had access to the original script.
The writers are seeking damages and a jury trial in federal court, sparking broader concerns in Hollywood about creative ownership and ethical boundaries in content development.
Many fans have questioned why the suit was classified as federal rather than civil. Legal analysts explain that although the case is civil, copyright infringement falls under U.S. federal law.
The involvement of multiple parties across state lines further necessitates federal jurisdiction.
