The news as it trends.

Today in the news: After President Donald Trump revoked the extended Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, California Governor Gavin Newsom has stepped in to ensure her safety.

As of today, Harris’s security detail is back on track, now under the protection of the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Harris, the first Black and South Asian woman to serve as Vice President, had her protection extended by President Biden until July 2026.

That decision was abruptly reversed by Trump, raising concerns about her safety—especially as she embarks on a 15-stop international book tour promoting her memoir, 107 Days, which reflects on her brief presidential campaign.

The CHP, while primarily known for highway enforcement, has a specialized dignitary protection unit trained to safeguard high-profile individuals within California.

Unlike the Secret Service, which operates nationally and internationally, CHP’s jurisdiction is state-bound and coordinated through local agencies.

This shift in security arrangements has sparked political tension.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass described the move as “another act of revenge,” emphasizing the importance of protecting Harris from politically motivated threats.

Although a recent Secret Service threat assessment found no credible danger, Harris’s elevated public profile and history of threats make her security a top priority.

Before becoming Vice President, Harris served as San Francisco District Attorney, California Attorney General, and U.S. Senator—roles that built her reputation for progressive leadership and legal expertise.

Her historic rise to the vice presidency placed her firmly in the national spotlight, making the revocation of her protection a controversial decision.

As CHP quietly assumes the role of guardian, this episode opens a new dialogue about the balance between federal authority, state responsibility, and political rivalry in safeguarding public officials.

This blog will be updated with any new developments.
