The news as it trends
Tai Solarin College of Education in Omu-Ajose has officially been renamed Sikiru Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology (SACOETEC).
Governor Dapo Abiodun announced the change to honor Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, for his enduring contributions to education and public life.
While some questioned whether this might sideline Tai Solarin’s legacy, the government clarified its intention: Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun still proudly bears his name and continues his educational mission.
For years, people often confused the college and university due to similar names and overlapping purposes.
The renaming resolves that confusion, gives the college its distinct identity, and ushers in a broader focus on science and technology.
Although a few Nigerians have voiced concern about institutions being named after traditional rulers and political figures, advocates insist this move honors visionaries who shaped the state — not erasing past legacies, but evolving them.
