In the USA.

The news as it trends.

The push to rename the Kennedy Center after Donald Trump has stirred a wave of anger, disbelief, and political tension.

Missouri Rep. Bob Onder’s bill, introduced just days after House Republicans proposed naming the center’s opera house after Melania Trump, is seen by many as an overt attempt to politicize a national institution dedicated to the arts and the legacy of John F. Kennedy.

Founded in 1964 as a memorial to JFK, the center stands as a symbol of cultural unity and artistic freedom.

But Trump’s recent takeover—after dismissing 18 Biden-appointed board members and installing himself as chairman—has triggered resignations, show cancellations, and social media outrage.

Public figures like Issa Rae and Rhiannon Giddens pulled performances in protest, while others have labeled the move “desperate” and “dishonorable.”

Onder defended his proposal by calling Trump “a significant cultural icon” and praised his “mastery of entertainment,” but many argue this undermines the intent of the Kennedy Center itself.

Online discourse has pointed out that replacing JFK’s name with Trump’s would erase one of the most enduring tributes to a president whose life was cut short but whose influence shaped generations.

As many on social media have echoed, the renaming attempt feels, to many, like a rewriting of history—trading legacy for loyalty.
