The news as it trends

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled more than 5 million above-ground pools sold by major retailers including Amazon, Walmart, and Target due to a serious drowning hazard.

The decision follows the tragic deaths of nine children under age 3 between 2007 and 2022.

At the heart of the risk are compression straps placed around the pool exterior.

These straps act as footholds, enabling young children to climb in—even when ladders are removed and adult supervision is present.

Brands impacted by the recall include Bestway, Coleman, Intex, and Polygroup, covering models sold as far back as 2002.

Consumers are strongly advised to contact manufacturers for a free safety repair kit or to drain the pool entirely until the issue is resolved.

This massive recall underscores the urgent need for vigilance when childproofing outdoor spaces.

Even familiar backyard setups can carry hidden risks—especially for toddlers who move fast and climb without warning.
