A 33-year-old man from Queens, New York, is facing serious charges after allegedly scamming a 68-year-old woman out of $62,000 through bogus astrology readings in Hicksville, Long Island.
Police say Hemanth Kumar Muneppa charged the woman $20,000 on July 3, then demanded an additional $42,000 during a follow-up session at Anjana Ji, a local astrology shop.
He even drove her to a nearby bank to withdraw the money—but bank staff became suspicious and alerted police.
Muneppa was arrested in the parking lot and charged with grand larceny, attempted grand larceny, and fortune telling—a crime in New York unless done solely for entertainment purposes.
Authorities believe there may be more victims and are urging anyone affected to contact Nassau County’s Second Squad at 516-573-6200.
