The news as it trends.

The Ekiti State Government has announced a sweeping ban on graduation ceremonies across all public and private schools, effective from the 2025/2026 academic session.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration says the move is aimed at easing the financial burden on parents, many of whom are already struggling under Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions.

For many Nigerian families, graduation ceremonies—once joyful milestones—have become costly obligations.

Parents often feel pressured to spend on outfits, food, decorations, and photography, just to keep up appearances.

In a time when inflation is soaring, fuel prices are unstable, and basic commodities are increasingly unaffordable, such expenses can be overwhelming.

The government also announced a textbook-sharing policy, allowing siblings to reuse books instead of buying new ones each year.

This is a welcome relief for households where school fees alone stretch monthly budgets to the limit.

The ban has sparked mixed reactions. While some lament the loss of tradition, others applaud the decision as a practical step toward financial sanity.
