Grammy-winning singer Ciara has officially become a citizen of Benin, embracing her African heritage in a deeply emotional ceremony held in Cotonou on July 26, 2025.
She is among the first public figures to benefit from Benin’s new law granting citizenship to descendants of enslaved Africans.
The initiative aims to heal historical wounds and reconnect the Black diaspora with their ancestral homeland.
Ciara’s journey included walking the Slave Route and visiting the Door of No Return in Ouidah—sites tied to the transatlantic slave trade.
She described the experience as a “profound return to what truly matters.”
At 39, Ciara joins a growing movement of African-American celebrities reclaiming their roots through citizenship and cultural restoration.
