The news as it trends
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the detention of activist Omoyele Sowore, describing it as a “shameful abuse of power.”
Sowore was reportedly arrested by the Inspector-General of Police’s monitoring unit after responding to a summons related to a petition.
While in custody, he claims he was assaulted, suffered a broken arm, and was sprayed with chemicals.
Atiku criticized the police for acting on what he called a personal vendetta, accusing the IGP of weaponizing state power to suppress dissent.
He demanded Sowore’s immediate release and urged Nigerians to speak out against injustice and authoritarianism.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage among civil rights organizations across Nigeria, raising serious concerns about democratic backsliding under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
