The Nigerian World
The news as it trends.
Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has sparked fresh debate after candidly addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges and the role of wealthy elites.
In a recent interview, Dangote criticized fellow billionaires for hoarding wealth and avoiding responsibility during national crises.
“There are more people in Nigeria who have more liquid cash than me. Maybe one, two, three—but they don’t do anything. When there is wahala, they go to Monaco and rest while me, I face the problems. I have developed grey hair already,” Dangote said.
The quote has gone viral, with many praising his honesty and commitment to Nigeria’s development.
Dangote emphasized that his wealth is actively invested in infrastructure, job creation, and long-term growth—not stashed away.
This renewed attention comes amid public scrutiny following the tragic death of Ruth Otabor, sister of BBNaija star Phyna, who was reportedly struck by a Dangote-owned truck near Auchi Polytechnic in August 2025.
Ruth had just graduated days before the accident, which led to a leg amputation and ultimately her death.
The incident has reignited calls for accountability, with critics pointing to a troubling pattern of fatal crashes involving Dangote trucks.
Meanwhile, Dangote continues to make headlines for his contributions to Nigeria’s economy.
His $20 billion refinery has reportedly ended Nigeria’s 50-year fuel queue crisis, a game-changer for average Nigerians, who now experience shorter wait times, lower fuel costs, and improved access to energy.
His fertiliser and petrochemical ventures are positioning Nigeria as a global export leader, while his launch of 4,000 CNG trucks is modernizing fuel transport and creating over 24,000 jobs.
His foundation, endowed with $1.25 billion, has supported millions through food aid, health programs, and education.
Recently, Dangote’s refinery made its first gasoline delivery to the United States.
Despite domestic crude shortages, the refinery has imported over 17 million barrels of U.S. crude to meet demand, a move that ensures continued production but raises questions about Nigeria’s energy independence.
Still, many Nigerians are asking: can a man so committed to industrial progress also be held accountable for the human cost of his empire?
As Dangote’s legacy grows, with a net worth estimated at $29.3 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which ranks him as the 72nd richest person in the world and still Africa’s wealthiest individual.
A title he’s held since 2008, and with it comes growing pressure to ensure that his impact uplifts—not endangers—the very people he claims, or intends, to serve.
