The Gambia has officially claimed victory in the Jollof Rice category at the 2025 West Africa Food Festival (WAFFEST), held in Accra, Ghana from September 22nd to 27th.
The competition, which featured culinary teams from across the region, reignited the long-standing rivalry between Nigeria, Ghana, and The Gambia over who makes the best Jollof rice.
Led by Chef Musa Darboe, the Gambian team impressed judges with their dish’s flavor, presentation, and authenticity, earning them the top spot.
In addition to the Jollof Rice win, the team also secured first place in other categories, including the Meatless Monday Vegan Challenge and the Bread Bake Contest.
The Gambia Tourism Board supported the team throughout the competition, and the win has been recognized as a significant achievement for the country’s culinary reputation.
The outcome of the contest has sparked renewed debate across West Africa, with The Gambia now holding regional bragging rights in one of the continent’s most fiercely contested food battles.
The 2025 WAFFEST concluded with widespread recognition of The Gambia’s culinary excellence and a reaffirmation of its place in West Africa’s vibrant food scene.
