The news as it trends

Thousands of Ivorians have taken to the streets to protest President Alassane Ouattara’s bid for a fourth term in office.

Demonstrations erupted across major cities, especially in Abidjan’s Yopougon suburb, where protesters waved placards reading “Enough is enough!” and “No true democracy without true justice.”

The unrest follows the electoral commission’s decision to bar key opposition figures, including Laurent Gbagbo and Tidjane Thiam, from contesting in the upcoming October election.

Ouattara, 83, previously removed term limits through a 2016 constitutional amendment.

Critics argue his continued stay in power undermines democratic principles.

Protesters are demanding a revised electoral roll and inclusion of all candidates.

As of now, Ivorian authorities have not responded publicly to the demonstrations.
