The news as it trends

Dr. Doyin Abiola, Nigeria’s first female editor of a national daily, passed away on August 6, 2025, at the age of 82.

A trailblazer in journalism, she shattered gender barriers and led the National Concord newspaper—founded by her husband, Chief MKO Abiola—with distinction and courage.

Her editorial leadership helped shape Nigeria’s media landscape and political discourse for over three decades.

Born in 1943, she earned her PhD in Communications and Political Science from New York University and lived in Nigeria, where she remained a powerful voice for truth and justice.

She was married to MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the annulled 1993 presidential election, and stood by him during Nigeria’s democratic struggles.

Together, they had one daughter, Doyinsola Abiola.

Her passing was confirmed by Jamiu Abiola, one of MKO Abiola’s sons, who spoke on behalf of the family.

Though not her biological child, Jamiu’s public acknowledgment reflects the deep respect and unity within the extended Abiola family.

Tributes have poured in from across the country, honoring her legacy as a visionary journalist, mentor, and advocate for democratic values.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
