The Nigerian World.
The news as it trends.
Two Chinese nationals, Huang Xiao Liang and Shi Yang Xiong, have been sentenced to one year in prison by a Federal High Court in Lagos for cyberterrorism and internet fraud.
The duo was part of a massive sting operation in December 2024, where 792 suspects were arrested for cryptocurrency scams and romance fraud.
Prosecutors said the men accessed Nigerian computer systems with intent to destabilize the economy and social structure.
Despite the severity of the charges, the light sentence — with an option of a ₦1 million fine — has sparked public outrage.
Nigerians online are questioning the judgment and the EFCC’s handling of the case, especially after only one convict’s photo was released.
Both men will be deported after serving their terms.
