Nollywood actor turned politician Kenneth Okonkwo is facing intense backlash after publicly declaring his support for a northern presidential candidate in the upcoming 2027 elections — a move many see as a betrayal of Peter Obi, whom he passionately supported in 2023.
In a recent interview with Channels TV, Okonkwo argued that fielding a southern candidate would hand President Tinubu an easy win.
He claimed only a northern consensus candidate — possibly Atiku Abubakar or Aminu Tambuwal — could realistically challenge Tinubu’s grip on power.
The reaction has been swift and brutal. Critics have labeled him a “political prostitute” and “desperate opportunist”, accusing him of abandoning principle for political survival.
On the Nigerian blogosphere, he’s been dragged beyond recognition, with some saying he’ll “do anything for relevance.”
Many Obi supporters feel blindsided, calling his shift a betrayal of the movement for equity and southern representation.
Okonkwo defends his stance as strategic realism, claiming Obi “won” in 2023 but was robbed — and that without establishment backing, another southern run would be futile.
Still, the damage is done. His comments have fractured trust and ignited fierce debate about loyalty, strategy, and the future of opposition politics in Nigeria.
