The news as it trends.

Following the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, on July 7, 2025, all eyes are now on Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, who is widely expected to become the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

At 80 years old, Ladoja is the most senior chief in the Egbe Agba (civil) line, which is next in rotation under Ibadan’s unique succession system.

According to his biography, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja was born on September 25, 1944, in Gambari village near Ibadan.

He is a seasoned politician, businessman, and traditional leader.

He studied chemical engineering at the University of Liege in Belgium and began his career at Total Nigeria before venturing into private business and politics.

He served as Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2007, surviving a controversial impeachment and later returning to complete his term.

Ladoja’s journey through the traditional hierarchy has been gradual and eventful.

In August 2024, he accepted the beaded crown as Otun Olubadan, resolving earlier disputes over the chieftaincy reforms introduced by the Oyo State government.

His acceptance of the crown made him eligible for the Olubadan stool, a requirement under the revised declaration.

To some of our blog readers who may be curious about his personal life: Ladoja is married to multiple wives. These include:

Bolatito Ladoja, often referred to as his main spouse

Tinuade Ladoja, who sadly passed away in 2023 at age 71

Bukola Ayinke Ladoja, whose 60th birthday he publicly celebrated

Ladoja is a father to many beautiful children, although he keeps his family life largely private.

He has stated that he is ready to serve if called upon, emphasizing that only those destined by God ascend the Olubadan throne.

His calm demeanor and deep roots in both politics and tradition have earned him widespread respect across Ibadanland.

As tradition dictates, the final confirmation of his ascension to the throne rests solely with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and the Olubadan-in-Council.

While the Olubadan-in-Council and the state governor continue their final rounds of decision-making, the city is already preparing for what promises to be a historic coronation.

If confirmed, Ladoja will become a monarch who bridges modern governance and ancient tradition — a symbol of Ibadan’s resilience, heritage, and continuity.
