A disturbing incident has rocked Lagos Island, Nigeria, after a senior member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), identified as Samsideen Oladiti, also known as Shamelon, was arrested for allegedly beating a dispatch rider to death.
The altercation reportedly began over a minor vehicle scratch to his vehicle but quickly escalated into violence.
Eyewitnesses claim Oladiti and others assaulted the rider using fists, a helmet, and a metallic ring, which inflicted severe head and facial injuries.
The victim was rushed to the hospital and placed on oxygen, but tragically passed away days later.
What makes this case even more alarming is that Oladiti is also linked to a previous fatal assault involving another man, who died after being struck with the same ring.
That incident occurred on August 28, 2025, and the victim died on September 17.
Following the dispatch rider’s death, angry residents gathered outside Oladiti’s office, setting fire to his motorcycles in protest.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed his arrest and transferred him to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, for further investigation.
This case has sparked widespread outrage across social media in Nigeria, with many calling for justice and accountability.
It raises serious questions about unchecked power within transport unions and the need for stronger enforcement of laws protecting everyday workers across the country.
